For a new blogger who’s still trying to wrap their head around SEO, it may feel like enough work just to pick your keywords be done with it. But this won’t help you very much if you want your post to come up in searches. The sooner you learn to think strategically about SEO and key word choices, the easier it’ll get.

Remember that your keyword choices are supposed to mimic the words a potential reader might search for online. Before you plug those keywords into your blog post, ask yourself if you can imagine someone searching for those words. If it doesn’t seem realistic, choose some different keywords.

If you have an SEO analysis tool for your blog, consider that it isn’t going to do anything for you except confirm that you did the bare minimum. It might approve your keyword choices, but the analysis tool won’t be able to tell you if those are keywords a person might actually use. You must make that call yourself.

Another one of the easy mistakes to avoid is picking vague, general keywords. They might not be as effective as you think. Even if they are, plenty of other bloggers might use those keywords for their own posts. If you want to stand out, try being more specific with your keyword choices.

This may depend on the platform you’re using, but an SEO analysis tool may not count your keywords if they don’t appear exactly as you entered them in at the bottom of the page. If you’ve noticed that your SEO Analysis doesn’t always register all of your keywords, your platform may have this problem.

In that case, try to take that into account while writing your content. Remember that if you put a keyword at the end of a sentence (near a period), or write the plural of a keyword, an SEO analysis tool may not always acknowledge that it’s there.

Some writers will write their content without thinking about SEO analysis or their keyword strategy. They will then go back and frantically rewrite their article to include their keywords. This is an awful idea, both for the SEO analysis tool and for the quality of your writing.

You’ll want to pick your keywords as soon as you have an idea and then do your best to work those keywords into your article as you go along. This saves time; I can’t count the time I’ve lost going through old drafts and frantically trying to get the keyword density up to 2%.

It may also help your writing flow better. If you shove your keywords in sideways after writing the entire article, people may tell.
