Harry Potter has been a staple in young adult literature since the first book’s release in 1997. Technology has changed drastically in those 23 years and so has our way of absorbing media. One of the most unexpected ways has been the rise in popularity of podcasts.
Podcasts have very few—if any—limitations on their subject matter. True crime, relationship advice, interviews, and book reviews or discussions are just a few of the popular topics that podcasters are putting out. But, Harry Potter has its own special corner of the podcast world. There are dozens of Harry Potter-themed podcasts to subscribe to, but these three are our favorites.
1. Harry Potter and the Sacred Text
This podcast dedicates its episodes to examining the text of the Harry Potter books in the same way we might examine religious texts. Each week, the team chooses a central theme and then uses that theme to analyze the characters and context of a chapter. They primarily examine through the lens of Judeo-Christian practices, but have had guests of different faiths on to explore other interpretations.
Launched in August 2005, MuggleCast is the original Harry Potter podcast. They cover a wide variety of topics including the Harry Potter theme parks, the original books, and recent projects like the Fantastic Beasts film franchise, just to name a few. They are also doing a chapter-by-chapter re-read of the books during quarantine on top of their regular content.
3. The Real Weird Sisters
Hosted by real-life sisters Alice Asleson and Martha Krebill, The Real Weird Sisters is an in-depth look at all things Harry Potter. Many themes are explored during their episodes: chapter-by-chapter re-reads of the series and sorting hat episodes where they put characters from pop culture into their respective Hogwarts houses. They also do book club discussions of each book, character analyses, and other miscellaneous topics relating to the world of Harry Potter.
Are there any Harry Potter podcasts you think we should listen to that aren’t on the list? Let us know in the comments!
