Normal People by Sally Rooney is dominating the Amazon bestsellers’ chart. The book is one of the most-read lockdown picks. Its success is linked to its BBC adaptation.
As COVID-19 erupted across the globe, governments were quick to enforce lockdowns. All of a sudden, we had a lot of free time on our hands. So, we turned to baking, binge-watching, and -at times- crying to deal with this new life. But one thing that we made sure we did was reading. Lots of reading.
The 1000-page classics, the trending trilogies and even the dystopian COVID books, we read them all. But, some books became unanimous picks. Sally Rooney’s Normal People was unsurprisingly one of them. The coming-of-age story is now an undisputed Amazon bestseller. And its popularity only continues to grow every passing day.
Amazon Lockdown Bestseller: Normal People Rules The Charts
In its 4th week on the Amazon bestsellers’ list, Normal People peaks at the 6th spot. The Sally Rooney novel is the fastest-selling Kindle read. And, it continues to move up the ladder on the Amazon’s bestsellers list every week. In the UK. Normal People was the most purchased book on Amazon between March 23 and May 11.
A BBC Adaptation Has Contributed To Normal People’s Popularity
COVID-19 has augmented the gross sales of all books. But, it isn’t governing people’s choice in books. Of course, some epidemic-centric books are trending. But, they aren’t the lockdown bestsellers. Varying reasons are causing an upsurge in sales of some books. Normal People by Sally Rooney, for instance, has gained popularity due to the work it has inspired.
Normal People isn’t only a book anymore. It’s now a BBC and Hulu series too. And its eponymous show Normal People has its author Sally Rooney at the helm.
BBC and Hulu had ordered Rooney’s work to a series in May 2019. The services enlisted Element Pictures to head the show. Daisy Edgar-Jones was first brought on board to headline the show as Marianne. Then, Paul Mescal joined the project as Connell. Normal People premiered on April 26th to universal acclaim.
Within three months of its launch, Normal People became BBC Three’s most-watched show. Hulu too, boasted about the show’s viewership records. Viewers found Marianne and Connell’s romance immersive and inspiring. To delve deeper into their story, they turned to the show’s source material. This interest stimulated an increase in the demand for the novel. Then, Amazon started receiving a lot of orders for Sally Rooney’s Normal People.
The success of Normal People by Sally Rooney isn’t unprecedented in history. Similar patterns have occurred elsewhere. In fact, one of Amazon’s best-selling novel is Celeste Ng’s Little Fires Everywhere. The book has perched on the Amazon chart for about 60 weeks. And a large part of its popularity comes from its high-profile adaptation at Hulu.
A season 2 for Normal People is only inevitable. So it is safe to assume that the Sally Rooney book is going to be an Amazon bestseller for quite a while.
