Psychoanalysis is one of the main psychological theories and therapies, helping in the acceptance of psychology as a science. After centuries of development, psychoanalysis is not only a theory, but is one of the main schools of psychology. With its concepts and techniques still recognized today, it is an important subject to understand. Psychoanalysts are a closed group of professionals, as only a few psychologists can become psychoanalysts.

Psychoanalysis is an extensive and complex theory. It poses that humans have unconscious desires, feelings, and thoughts. It suggests that humans have three natural states: conscious, preconscious, and unconscious, with the conscious and unconscious ruled by opposite forces. According to psychoanalysts, we are constantly at an internal war with ourselves.

Psychoanalysts suggest that mental disorders are ingrained in our unconscious, and the symptoms are manifestations of disturbances to resolve. That is why they dedicate their jobs to searching for those disturbances through what we say, because in psychoanalysis, speaking is one of the best ways to heal.

When most people hear the word psychoanalyst, the first person that comes to mind is Sigmund Freud. Psychoanalysis was his genius development, but he is not the only psychoanalyst who made strides in the field. One of his students and greatest collaborators, Carl Jung, is also a big name in the science. Jun was an inquisitive and critical psychoanalyst that write incredible books, eventually developing his own psychological theory.

But psychoanalysis is still an intense and complex theory to read and understand. That is why I’ve selected four quotes from Jung that apply psychoanalysis to real life to not only help you understand the science better, but to realize aspects of yourself you might identify that need healing.

This quote is special to me because, similar to many psychologists, I can relate to what I read in the quote. When you become a psychologist there are so many things you notice that others do not and at some point, as Jung says, we find ourselves alone. This quote is from Jung’s 1989 memoir titled Memories, Dreams, Reflections and is an example of how he understood his profession.

This is a common feeling among psychologists and psychoanalysts. There are so many things you understand as a psychologist that others don’t perceive, both good and bad. This duality in humans is one of the main aspects psychoanalysis teaches us, making this quote a point of emphasis with many psychologists.

One of the main topics from psychoanalysis is the ego and manipulation of the masses, making this quote pertinent to the science. This quote comes from Jung’s The Undiscovered Self. This quote perfectly shows the science of psychoanalysis and will leave you thinking about life in general. Carl Jung discovered that human beings have always had a main purpose, and in psychoanalysis that purpose is the combination of four elements: faith, love, insight, and hope. This quote is from Jung’s 1955 book, Modern Man in Search of a Soul.

This quote is a perfect example of how psychoanalysts see humans as always in search of something with the only way of finding it being through living one’s life. One main principle of psychoanalysis is that life is suffering, but the only way through that suffering is living. Experiencing and living is the only way to end our constant searching.

This quote is one of the most relevant from Carl Jung that all psychologists and those struggling with mental illness should read because it is a fresh perspective on mental illness through the lens of psychoanalysis. This quote is from Jung’s masterpiece book, Psychogenesis of Mental Disease, a compilation of Jung’s work on psychoanalysis.

This quote contains psychoanalysis’ explanation for mental disorders, proposing that mental illnesses are based in our systems and are just our reaction to emotional problems. It proposes that psychologists are just a guide that can offer tools, but the solution is not in their hands.

You need not be a psychoanalyst to understand what Jung has to teach us because this is a theory meant to help us understand life and suffering. Many psychoanalysts have incredible quotes that can help us understand life.
