We all might know Stephenie Meyer as the creator of the Twilight Saga novels. But, the author has many other stories. One of them is The Host. This is The Host, Stephenie Meyer’s Alien story masterpiece.
The Host is a science fiction book written by Stephenie Meyer. This romance novel is an alien story with an intense fictional world. In fact, The Host has a really complex and detailed science fiction story. But, the book is such a masterpiece because of its well-built elements and story telling. This is not just another love story.
This alien love novel was released in 2008 with an initial print run of over 750 thousand copies of the book. The Host was the #1 book on the New York Times Best Sellers for over 26 weeks in 2008! And, in 2013, it was developed into a film adaptation by Open Road Films with Saoirse Ronan starring.
The Host is set in a post-apocalyptic time with Earth being invaded by a parasitic alien race. In this story, an alien race called “Souls” can be implanted in a human’s body to take it over. The alien race invaded Earth, deeming that humans didn’t deserve it for being too violent and thoughtless.
In The Host, when a Soul is implanted into a human body, the consciousness of the original owner is erased. The alien then must live with the memories and the knowledge the human leaves. But, not all humans are easily erased; some struggle and fight to get their bodies and lives back. An example of that is Melanie whose consciousness stills alive even when the alien soul, Wanderer, is implanted.
That is how the Wanderer starts struggling with Melanie’s memories, knowledge, and consciousness, that constantly communicates with the host. The alien then starts struggling with overwhelming feelings, because the human body makes her feel things as human. Thanks to that, the alien begins to give in to Melanie’s wishes and feelings.
In the book, the Wanderer follows Melanie’s instructions and goes to find her Uncle Jeb. When the uncle finds her, he realizes what happened to her. But, even with the alien, Wanderer, taking control of Melanie, he stills lead them both to his hideout. The hideout is a network of caves with over 30 human survivors, including Melanie’s boyfriend Jared.
When the Wanderer starts living with them, most of the human survivors want her to be killed. That is-except for Jared, Melanie’s brother, Jamie, and a man called Ian. Over days living there, the Wanderer, learns a lot about humans. And even starts developing her own feelings by falling in love with Ian.
The alien then decides to help humans cut out the souls of their hosts so they can recover their bodies and lives. Even though that meanz Wanderer will disappear and get separated from the man she fell in love with.
Now, The Host is a really interesting book. Its story embraces the uniqueness and the positive side of humans, our emotionality, and our capability of loving. This is a different love story to read and enjoy this summer.
