We know the benefit of free ebook giveaways to writers and publishers, but readers have different benefits that can have a lasting impact on their reading journeys.

It is no secret that authors and publishers benefit from free book and e-book giveaways. There has been less emphasis, however, on the benefits readers gain from free e-book giveaways.

I’ve joined many book sites over the years, both as an author and as a reader. Many sites regularly provide e-book giveaways that offer many benefits to readers, including BookBub, Kobo, Project Gutenberg, and Inkitt. Here are just some of the benefits readers get from these giveaways.

1. Readers Can Discover Other Authors and Genres

A few years ago, I downloaded Kindle Alexander’s Always and Mary Calmes’ All Kinds of Tied Down as part of a free e-book giveaway promotion from Kobo. I’d never heard of these authors and had never read LGBT-genre books before. Since these e-books were free and the excerpts were interesting, I thought I’d check them out.

Always was one of the best love stories I’ve read in the last ten years, while All Kinds of Tied Down was a fun, addictive read. I’ve since purchased thirty e-books written by Mary Calmes and eight by Kindle Alexander. I’ve also purchased books from other authors in this genre. The biggest benefit to me was learning of unknown authors and exploring a new genre.

2. Increased Access to Books

Physical books can be expensive in some countries which can limit access to books in low-income communities, especially if the decision comes between buying the latest bestseller or a week of groceries. Free e-books could provide significant benefits to readers in these countries and communities.

A benefit of e-book giveaways in these communities is the increase in access to books when libraries are not always readily available. People can download reading apps on phones or e-readers, making e-books more accessible. Worldreader is an organization that aims to make e-books more accessible for children and increase literacy.

3. Gain a Library at Zero Cost

These days, we take our libraries everywhere. Our phones and tablets enable us to carry hundreds of books in one hand. The benefit of free e-book giveaways is that you can now create your own library, adding new titles, authors, and different genres, all at zero cost. If that isn’t a book lover’s dream, I don’t know what is!

Free e-book giveaways offer many benefits to readers because it can contribute to increased literacy, foster a love of reading in new readers, and allow for a continued appreciation of reading for seasoned readers.
