PS4 and Switch have announced a remaster of Nocturne. Here’s my list of the top 3 hardest bosses in this third Shin Megami Tensei game, in honor of the announcement.

Nocturne is a great game for anyone who has not played it. It is a rare relic I found for the PlayStation 2 from a good friend. Play past the hard bosses listed below to enjoy a fantastic post apocalyptic story.

#1 Hard Boss: Matador

If you’ve ever played Nocturne before, the Matador should not be new to you. The Matador is at the beginning of the game, and the first hard battle you come across. There’s also no warning about what kind of fight this will be. The standard enemies and previous bosses are so much easier to fight than this guy.

I recommend being at least level 20 to beat this boss successfully. You might luck out and gain that level while building up and trying to get the ability “Fog Breath.” Fog Breath will disarm Matador’s hyper dodging to any attack. From then on, just keep up with physical attacks and healing when necessary.

#2 Hard Boss: Thor

I hate this battle so much. I love Thor in the Marvel Universe, but hate Thor in Nocturne. I consider the fight with Matador harder, but only because of the sudden difficulty shift.

Thor is the 3rd boss in a row you have to face when you reach Ikebukuro. If you lose, that’s it. Start back over at the first boss of the area. Nocturne does an excellent job of testing your patience with this string of battles. The delightful news is that you can save after you defeat Thor.

This battle is straight-up unfair, in my humble opinion. First, Thor is powerful, so you better have built up before entering this area. I recommend level 25-30 for survival. Thor is electric-based, so all of his moves will imply lightning strikes or abrasive physical attacks. The unfair aspect of this is you have nothing to protect against electric attacks at this point in the game. I suggest trying to drain his magic as much as possible.

#3 Hard Boss: Lucifer

Nocturne has to throw this minor challenge in the game because why not? The battle with Lucifer is difficult. He has a ton of HP, and he is powerful. The good part is that he is an optional boss. If you think you’re up for that challenge, good luck and prepare very well.

The best abilities for this Nocturne extra battle are “War Cry,” “Pierce,” “Fog Breath,” and “Debilitate.” Other than those, just keep up with your attacks to defeat Lucifer. Oh, and pay attention to your HP and your demons.

The first time I tried this battle, I ran into headfirst without preparation. Do not do this. Aggravated beyond belief, I spent my time wisely to better prepare for the battle so I would not throw my controller again. The reward for all of this nonsense is knowing you beat the hardest boss in the entire game, and you achieve the True Demon Ending.
