Although Xbox has always been the king when it comes to backward compatibility, they decided that backward compatibility alone wasn’t enough. To compete with Sony’s backward compatibility on the PlayStation 5, Xbox went to an unprecedented level with Smart Delivery on the Xbox Series X. Even though the Series X already promises to play games from the original Xbox (which features games from 20 years ago!), Smart Delivery ups the ante even more. Here is every detail that we know about Smart Delivery from Xbox.
The goal of Xbox Smart Delivery is to allow players to buy just one version of each game. For example, Cyberpunk 2077 is releasing for Xbox One this September. However, CD Projekt will also release an Xbox Series X version of the game later. While the Xbox One version of the game will already work in the Xbox Series X, it will not have the same quality. This may lead to players buying two versions of the game.
Smart Delivery works to solve that problem. If you play Cyberpunk 2077 on the Xbox Series X, it will always play the Series X version of the game. Likewise, if you play a Series X game on an Xbox One, it will play the Xbox One version. It doesn’t matter which version of a game you buy. Smart Delivery will always play the most optimized version for whichever console you’re using.
Like Xbox’s current backward compatibility, you won’t need to worry about losing progress either. Even though you will play on different versions of the game, it will act as one game. Smart Delivery will work to create a seamless transition between consoles.
Smart Delivery will also not only work for not only digital games, but physical games as well. Digital and physical purchases will all have Smart Delivery available. Even Xbox Game Pass games will work with Smart Delivery!
Unfortunately, Smart Delivery will not work for all Xbox games. It will be an optional feature for developers. There is not a complete list of games that will use Smart Delivery yet. However, some big titles have already announced their implementation. While the list will continue to grow, the games that have confirmed Smart Delivery are:
- Halo Infinite
- Cyberpunk 2077
- Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
- Destiny 2
- DiRT 5
- Scarlet Nexus
- Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2
- Yakuza: Like a Dragon
- The Ascent
- Call of the Sea
- Gears 5
- Second Extinction
- Metal: Hellslinger
This is exciting news for Xbox fans. Having the most optimized version of a game can be very important. What do you think about Smart Delivery from Xbox? Will you be buying the Xbox Series X or the PlayStation 5? Leave a comment and let me know!
