Streaming is a popular career choice for many in the gaming industry. Social Media Guru Allison Moss interviews Michael Baney for more insight into this career!
Twitch streamer Michael Baney, also known as Baneyboii, sat down with our social media expert, Allison Moss, to discuss some of the challenges and highlights of streaming on Twitch. Here is what she learned!
Challenges of Being a Streamer
What’s one of the biggest challenges you face as a new streamer?
“One of the biggest challenges is discoverability, especially on Twitch. Twitch usually categorizes streamers in each game category by view count, or recommendations based off of your Twitch history. So, you have to do a lot of networking with other streamers and friends to get your name out there and really put your nose on the grindstone. Everyone wants to have those large viewership numbers, sure, but having a consistent community of viewers is still a great feeling because you know that they come to watch you for you and not just the game.”
How do you handle copyright issues?
“Luckily, I haven’t dealt with too many copyright issues as of yet and I will be keeping my fingers crossed. The main concern with Twitch, and even YouTube and Twitter right now, is huge copyright issues with DCMA. Channels and Twitter accounts are being suspended or even banned in some cases just because of a video containing copyrighted content. So, when I stream, I used a Spotify playlist created by Harris Heller called StreamBeats; it is all royalty-free music created by Heller to be used by content creators. It has been a life-saver so that I do not have to worry about my streams being taken down.”
More About Baneyboii
What is your favorite game? Why?
“This is a broad question, because I play so many different kinds of games and love so many! Growing up, I was really (like reaaalllllyyyy) into rhythm games, and my favorite rhythm game of all time is Guitar Hero 3; I will say that it was a lot easier than learning real guitar. But, my favorite game of all time is the one I keep going back to replay after so many years: Fallout: New Vegas. This was the first RPG that I ever played, and that was a decade ago. It had a wonderful story, with such a fleshed-out world of lore to get immersed in. I actually stream playthroughs of it on my Twitch channel.”
What makes you unique as a streamer?
“For me, video games were always an escape. They were something that I could play to just take my eyes off of the world and make me forget about my problems for just a little bit. When I stream, I want to create that kind of space for my viewers. I love having unique conversations with everyone, and if it’s a topic that I know I have extensive knowledge in, I will talk anyone’s ears off about it. I love building this community, and love seeing it grow more and more. I want people to watch me because of me, not because of a character that I personify, or just gameplay (if I’m honest, no one sticks around for gameplay because I am just trying my best at most games).”
