Experts have found three foods with one key commonality that play a role in lowering your risk of dementia. Participants in a study who consumed higher amounts of these foods showed a surprising decrease in their risk of developing dementia.

Scientists reported to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that foods high in flavonoids may have a connection to a lower risk of dementia. Among these foods were, as you might expect, many fruits and vegetables. It included as well other foods like tea and lean meats.
The study looked at 2,801 men and women 50 years of age and older. Participants showed no signs of dementia at the start of the study. Over a follow-up average of 20 years, researchers gathered dietary information at five key periodic health examinations with participants. Results showed that those who had a higher intake of flavonoids, showed a 42 to 68 percent lower risk for dementia depending on the specific flavonoid consumed.
Based on the study, these are the top three foods high in a particular flavonoid, anthocyanins, associated with a lower risk of dementia.

It’s important to note that this is only one study that found a potential correlation. The study notes that these results may not be the most consistent and are not a guarantee. Nonetheless, berries are high in antioxidants, which are beneficial for many other reasons. Additionally, red wine in moderation has been proven beneficial for those with heart disease.
