Drinking water is vital to functions such as our mood, brain health, muscles, how we feel, and helping us lose weight. Here are a few reasons why.

Drinking water is important as a daily ritual for your health and well being.
Drinking water is important as a daily ritual for your health and wellbeing.

There are reasons why our parents and doctors tell us to drink plenty of water and get that 8 cups of 8 ounces each day. Not only does our body depend on it, but even things we wouldn’t think of like our mood depend on it.

Sports drinks are great in some situations, however, it’s best to stick to water when you can as they’re full of sugar. Unless you’re an athlete going through intensive training, you don’t need sports drinks to help keep you hydrated.

Even then, there are better alternatives such as add in’s that you can place in your water such as Nuun tablets, these will help you stay hydrated with electrolytes, vitamins, and minerals, depending on the kind you choose, without all the added sugar.

Personally, I drink anywhere from 64 to 80 oz of water a day using my handy water bottle with a straw (somehow I find it easier to drink more with a straw) such as these made by Camelbak. Mine holds 750ml of water that I fill 3-4 times a day.

Along with the 2 cups of coffee that I have in the mornings, this is pretty much all I drink to keep myself moving at a decent pace. I used to drink a lot of soda, but after finding that was dragging me down energy-wise and was making me gain unwanted weight, I dropped that habit and went to water and coffee only.

5 Reasons You Should Drink Water

1. Water helps with brain function.

It’s shown that not having a proper amount of water leads to a decrease in cognitive function and this can cause issues like poor decision making, and poor reaction time.

2. Water helps with being regular.

Studies found that a reduced intake of water will cause constipation.

3. Water improves your mood.

It’s well known that when you feel better, both by having a clear mind and feeling better physically, you’ll be in a better mood.

4. Water helps you feel fuller and eat less.

When you’re trying to lose weight like I have been, there’s nothing more frustrating than feeling hungry (hunger pangs are the worst!). Drinking water before a meal will not only hydrate you but help you feel fuller and help you eat less.

5. Water and your skin.

Your skin, the epidermis, is the largest organ of your body. Keeping it hydrated is important to maintaining your appearance, and its ability to keep elasticity.
