There are many benefits to pet ownership, but this one has had the biggest impact. Read on to learn how my dog helped me go from boredom to happiness during the COVID-19 quarantine.
The other day, while stuck in COVID-19 quarantine, I was bored. So I looked up some causes of boredom. One cause of boredom is a lack of mental stimulation. I get plenty of mental stimulation from my computer, so I kept looking.
Another cause of boredom is a lack of sleep and poor nutrition. I have been eating too much lately, so I continued my search. Another cause of boredom is lack of exercise, like walking.
Walking is always good exercise, but I would rather sit and watch TV or work on my computer. My little dog likes to meet people, as well as other dogs. She does not like to stay at home on the couch. So, after patiently waiting, she gives me a bark to go for a walk.
When I go outside, I find my neighbors—who would rarely talk to me—stopping and greeting my little dog, and then me. A conversation starts and my little dog plays with another dog, while we watch, converse and socialize. The fresh scene—dogs playing and neighbors talking—all make the boredom go away.
This would never happen without my dog, especially during COVID-19 quarantine. People would just pass by on their walk and perhaps give a greeting. My little dog breaks the barrier between people and a moment of conversation begins with a stranger or neighbor. I am in the present and with amazing ordinary people. I am no longer bored.
Walking my dog provides exercise and a relief from the boredom of COVID-19 quarantine. There are other benefits. While walking my dog, I find myself suddenly clarifying a problem or situation that I was previously thinking about. This clarification eases my mind and I find that I enjoy nature. Sometimes I call these walks, my problem-solving walks. I am happy walking, being in the present, and not bored.
When you walk often, the days seem to meld. Then you recall an evening when you saw Halley’s comet.
Or a large, full moon when it was very close to earth.
Or the time you saw a red moon.
Or new leaves on trees in the spring, a beautiful sunset, the first snowfall, or a rainbow over a flower bed. You thank your dog for adding to your enjoyment of life. Life is exciting and not boring, even during COVID-19 quarantine.
There are lots of people who are lonely and bored and dogs can lead the way to conversation. This is more important right now, during COVID-19 quarantine.
If you do not have a dog or your dog could use a dog companion, visit your local animal shelter. They have a companion waiting for your love, a walk, a chance for you to meet others, and a way to ease your boredom.
