A Brilliant Young Mind is a 2014 romance drama movie, directed by Morgan Matthews. This romance movie was inspired by the 2007 documentary Beautiful Young Minds, and it focuses on a young teenage romance.

This movie shares the story of Nathan Ellis, a teenage math prodigy diagnosed with autism. Because of Nathan’s autism, he struggles to relate to the world around him, and has a particular way of expressing love to others. Perhaps the best example is how he treats his mother. He is cold and distant to his mother, and shows her little to no affection.

But after evading feelings and physical contact for most of his life, Nathan attends a math camp in Taiwan, to compete for a place in Cambridge. There, he is paired with teenage girl, Zhang, who slowly supports him and helps him to adjust to this new situation. Romance enters Nathan’s life for the first time, and his autism leaves him fighting to understand what he’s feeling, and how to express it.

Keep the Change is a 2017 romantic comedy, written and directed by Rachel Israel, starring Samantha Elisofon and Brandon Polansky. This romance movie is special not only because it’s about autism but also because the lead actors have autism. It was a low-budget inclusive movie that gave two wonderful people with autism the chance to shine.

This romantic comedy follows David, an aspiring filmmaker who doesn’t accept his autism. A judge eventually mandates David attend to a social program, a support group for people with autism. In the group, he meets Sarah, an uninhibited and direct woman with autism, and the two get paired to visit the Brooklyn Bridge together.

They build a unique relationship in the time they spend together. This couple with autism struggle with their differences, and the convictions of their families. But they became able to live and love in their own way.


These two movies have overwhelming stories and are there to help raise awareness about autism. We can all help to improve the wellness of people with autism just by understanding how they live, love and feel differently.
