Continuity Mistakes Happen All the Time
You might not notice them too often, but continuity mistakes happen a lot. Filmmakers don’t catch every error, but fans do. If there’s even the slightest mistake, it won’t take viewers long to spot it.

It is more common to find continuity mistakes in older films, when continuity wasn’t as important. Nowadays, there’s someone on set with the purpose of keeping continuity in check. It’s very important to the film. Any mistake can rip the viewers from the story, making them focus only on the error.
1. The Wizard of Oz
The film The Wizard of Oz is full of continuity mistakes. Dorothy’s hair changes lengths every other scene. Her basket disappears and reappears during the Tin Man’s song ‘If I Only Had a Heart.’ Let’s also take into account that her ruby slippers are sometimes swapped for black slippers.
When the chandelier is knocked down in the witch’s lair, the candles are blown out. Only, in the next scene, they’re all relit. These are classic continuity mistakes. These types of mistakes can come from changes in re-shoots, after most of the film has already been shot.
2. The Lord of the Rings
If only there were cars in Middle Earth. It would make the lengthy journeys so much easier. Well, if you look closely, there is. Peter Jackson didn’t notice the car in the background. It’s hidden well and is still visible in the early releases of the film.
There are a few other continuity mistakes in these blockbuster films. The ring on Frodo’s hand changes fingers. Crew members are visible within the Orc Army during the large battle in Return of the King. The harness keeping Elijah Wood in the air while he was being devoured by a giant spider was visible at points.
Jacob’s shoulder tattoo changes places through the film. Fans quickly noticed the changing placement. In another scene Bella trips, pushing a girl in a hat in front of her. In the next scene, the girl in the hat is replaced by a new, hatless girl.
Concluding the first Twilight film, Bella’s prom dress changes from purple to teal. A big change. There are quite a few mistakes through this film that fans were quick to address.
4. American Sniper
Did you notice that the baby Chris Kyle clung to was, in fact, a fake? It was a plastic doll. Apparently the actual baby was sick, so they resorted to a doll. There were a few other minor mistakes throughout this film, but the baby topped the list.
A jacket zipped in one scene, but unzipped in the other. Chris reaches out to shake someone’s hand with his left hand, but is shown shaking the person’s hand with his right hand. These are simple continuity mistakes where you compare it to a glaringly fake baby.
5. Pulp Fiction
Premature bullet holes are just the start of the continuity mistakes in Pulp Fiction. You’ll notice when John Travolta and Samuel Jackson survive gunfire, the bullet holes were already in the wall. When Mia Wallace is taking an adrenaline shot, they mark her with a red magic marker. The next time we see her, it’s gone.
There are a few minor continuity mistakes in this film as well. You’ll notice when the scenes cut, the character’s hair is placed differently. A cigarette that was resting in someone’s hand is suddenly in their mouth. These are very minor mistakes that are often overlooked in the world of continuity.
