The near decade-old film ‘Contagion’ has been getting attention in 2020, because of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. Let’s check out some similarities.
After 5 months of its outbreak, the COVID-19 virus has brought many changes to humanity. When it started, few expected a world-wide pandemic. But 9 years ago, there was an idea that something like this could happen. It was the movie Contagion.
Contagion is a sci-fi thriller film made in 2011. And now, in 2020 with the COVID-19 outbreak, it seems like the movie posed as a warning.
Well, Contagion was actually inspired by the 2009-2010 spread of the H1N1 influenza. The film is a fictional adaptation that depicted a more extreme outbreak. Now the movie doesn’t feel that extreme, considering its similarities to our given situation.
The movie’s plot follows the spread of an unknown virus that kills people and gets spread fast. And it follows the health institutions’ efforts to save as many lives as possible.
But the movie Contagion also shows off the human’s response in survival situations, and the fears based in human being’s vulnerability. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Contagion is an even more relevant reflection of reality.
Some similarities between the movie Contagion‘s plot and the COVID-19 pandemic are a little too on the nose. It’s scary. Similarities such as:
- The virus’ outbreak started in China. In the movie Contagion, the virus started in China and got quickly spread to the rest of the world. The difference is that in the movie there is not a specific place where the virus started, while the COVID-19 outbreak started in the city of Wuhan.
- The virus’ origin implicates a bat. In Contagion, the virus originated from the consumption of a pig that ate food dropped by an infected bat. While the COVID-19 has been linked to the consumption of wild animals from the Wuhan’s Wet Market.
- Similar Symptoms. In the movie, the infected people had fever, headaches, sore throat and cough. And the COVID-19’s symptoms include fever and lungs’ affection. The difference is that in Contagion, there were other harsh symptoms like seizures.
- The transmission and quick spread. The MED-1 virus in Contagion is a respiratory disease that is carried in expelled droplets of saliva. It also lingers on surfaces for some time. The same happens with COVID-19.
