Lady Gaga isn’t the only singer to have shined in a movie. Musicians Cher and Beyonce have also channelled award-winning movie performances.
In 2006, Bill Condon adapted the prodigal Broadway hit Dreamgirls for the big-screen. And his work did something historical. It redefined the dynamics between music, movies and the stars of the entertainment industries. It highlighted that singers can also be splendid actors.
Dreamgirls‘ lead trio: Beyonce, Anika Noni Rose and Jennifer Hudson have established a model for entertainers. Musicians have since then dared to experiment, overlapping the show-biz worlds.
There are a few names that pop into our minds when we try to sketch a Venn-diagram for acting and music. So here is our list of 3 singers that have fascinated us in movies: Cher, Beyonce and Lady Gaga.
Beyonce AKA, The Queen, has more film credits to her name than Cher and Lady Gaga. As you’d expect from a queen, the former Destiny’s Child vocalist even has her own concert film on Netflix. Homecoming is all about Beyonce and her performance at the 2018 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. But that is just one non-fiction entity in her elaborate filmography.
Beyonce made her acting debut with the musical drama Carmen: A Hip Hopera. The film was not a commercial success. But her second film project alongside Mike Myers, the star-studded Austin Powers in Goldmember, was a box-office hit. Beyonce continued her videography, scoring her first critical hit in The Fighting Temptations.
The Fighting Temptations ensued a streak of successful films for Beyonce. The R&B star made it big in Hollywood with The Pink Panther, Cadillac Records, and Obsessed. But her single greatest performance was in Dreamgirls, for which she has a Satellite nomination.
As her popularity grew, Beyonce turned to voice roles. She voiced Queen Tara in the 2013 animated flick Epic. Recently, Beyonce featured in the Lion King (2019) remake as the voice of Nala.
If we were to curate chronologically, Cher would appear before Beyonce and Lady Gaga in the list of singers who are also actresses. The Goddess of Pop, Cher launched her music and acting careers almost simultaneously. The Believe artist has several notable films to her credit. In fact, two of her roles have also landed her Academy nods.
Cher began her acting career with the Broadway play Come Back to the Five and Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. The play was soon adapted to a film that also starred Cher.
Unlike Beyonce and Lady Gaga, film success came to Cher early. After Jimmy Dean, Cher starred in critically acclaimed pictures. She acted in Silkwood (1983), Mask (1985), The Witches of Eastwick (1987), and Moonstruck (1987), which won the singer her first Academy Award.
Like Cher and Beyonce, Lady Gaga is also a marvellous actress. When we talk about Lady Gaga’s film career, A Star Is Born automatically headlines the discussion. But the prestigious project isn’t the only silver-screen endeavour of Stefani Germanotta.
The singer’s filmography includes The Sopranos, Sin City, and multiple seasons of American Horror Story. Lady Gaga even has a Golden Globe for her role in American Horror Story: Hotel.
A Star Is Born remains Lady Gaga’s most prominent cinematic work to date. Germanotta’s self-assured, engaging performance in the film helped it earn several BAFTA and Academy Award nominations. The movie also elevated Lady Gaga to a new, cosmic level of stardom. Lady Gaga would, on any day, top the list of singers who are also skilled actors.
While it’s not uncommon to see singers like Cher, Beyonce, and Lady Gaga act in movies, actors too have dared to sing in films. The ‘leading lady of Hollywood’, Julia Roberts, lent her vocals for a sequence in ‘Pretty Women‘. Emma Watson and Saoirse Ronan, who recently co-starred in Greta Gerwig’s ‘Little Women‘, have performed for ‘Beauty and the Beast‘ and ‘Riverdale‘ respectively.
There are also many male singers who have aced it in cinema. Read our follow up list of 3 male singers of have stepped into acting.
