Roald Dahl enthusiasts get ready, because Netflix is coming out with its own Matilda movie. Rumors are buzzing over who will appear in the movie, including talks of Jodie Comer and Danny DeVito.
Roald Dahl gave us the brilliant Matilda Wormwood in 1988. And in 1996, Mara Wilson recreated the character on the big screen. Now, Netflix is giving the mystical little girl a musical movie of her own. The movie will not adapt the original source material. Rather, it will render Tim Minchin’s popular stage play Matilda the Musical.
While we don’t know who is going to enact the lead role yet. The main cast already has a few starry additions. These include Harry Potter’s Ralph Fiennes and possibly Killing Eve‘s Jodie Comer. Danny Devito might also reprise his role as Mr. Wormwood.
Jodie Comer Joins The Cast Of Netflix’s Matilda Movie?
Jodie Comer is best known for her role as Killing Eve‘s vengeful and vitriolic Vivanelle. But Comer is Working Title Films favorite choice to play Miss Honey. This comes as a big switch for Comer, as she plays an extremely intense character on her BBC drama right now. But makers and fans are sure that Comer can nail it as a kind-hearted, mild-mannered Honey. It’s a testimony to the actress’ versatility and acting prowess.
Earlier Emma Stone’s name surfaced as the choice for Miss Honey. But the deal did not materialize. And now Jodie Comer is the strongest contender for the role.
Netflix Matilda Movie Casts Ralph Fiennes As Miss Trunchbull.
Goodbye Pam Ferris, because the Netflix Matilda movie has cast Ralph Fiennes as the new Trunchbull. Both Fiennes and Ferris have co-incidentally played villains on Harry Potter. Fiennes, of course, played the phenomenal noseless Voldemort. Ferris meanwhile, starred as Harry’s arrogant, unpleasant Aunt Marge.
Fiennes isn’t the only man to take the role of Matilda’s terrifying headmistress. Bertie Carvel has been entertaining U.K. audiences as Miss Trunchbull in Matilda The Musical since 2011. Unlike Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes has already signed the dotted line for the movie.
Has the Netflix Matilda Movie Cast Danny Devito To Re-enact Mr. Wormwood?
So suggests the rumour mill. Danny Devito and Jodie Comer are the unconfirmed stars on Netflix’s Matilda, but they seem to be promising suspects. Danny Devito is already in the talks for a Hercules live-action remake. Filming for both the films will take place simultaneously once production restarts. So Devito will have to pick between his options, in case the schedules clash.
Danny Devito has a Satellite nomination for his performance as Mr. Wormwood. He transcends in the 1996 adaptation of Roald Dahl’s work. And he also took care of the film’s lead star Mara Wilson while her mother was struggling with cancer.
Netflix has set its Matilda movie for a 2021 release. The cast was meant to commence shooting in August, but with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic the movie’s production may see a delay. Matthew Warchus is directing Netflix’s Matilda. He also guides the Matilda musical, which is the source material for the upcoming movie.
Netflix has yet to cast several characters for its upcoming Matilda movie. There is still no word about who will play Matilda, Mrs Wormwood, Bruce Bogtrotter or Amanda Thripp.
