More than a feeling, love is a basic need. We all need to love, to relate to others, and to share our emotions. But what happens when our need for love overpowers a healthy state of mind? That is love addiction. So Beware! Here are four signs you might have a love addiction.
Humans are motivated through needs. Under this theory, those needs are divided into a hierarchy of levels. On the third level, the need for belonging and relating to others comprises love. Love is something that overcomes just feeling and attraction. It is a complete and complex construct. But like any other need, love can also overcome the normal statements and became something different. Human beings are susceptible to take their needs to new and abnormal levels- something we know as addictions.
Love addiction is also known as pathological love. It is a pattern of behaviors characterized by a maladaptive, pervasive, and interest in love partners. In that way, love addiction is a pathological condition in which there is a lack of control. But it is also characterized by the renounce of other interests or behaviors to focus only on love.
#1 Sign of Love Addiction: Deep Attraction
Things other than true-love may trigger the sensation of love at first sight. In fact, that level of sudden deep love is not healthy. So the first sign of love addiction is in a constant feeling of deep attraction because even though a deep attraction is normal in most romantic relationships, it doesn’t stay for too long.
Also, being in a constant state of deep attraction means the relationship hasn’t evolved. When you have a love addiction, you are continually searching for the emotions of the start. That means you become addicted to the overwhelming superficial emotions that come with your relationships. It doesn’t mean you love in the relationship at all.
#2 Sign of Love Addiction: Deep Idealization
We have talked about idealization before. Idealization is a process often seen when falling in love. When it overcomes normal levels, however, idealization becomes a sign of love addiction. The deep glorification of another person sustains love addiction.
Thanks to deep idealization, love surpasses a need and is transformed into an abnormal desire. It is based on irrational thoughts. Being in a relationship becomes the need, even when love isn’t present in the relationship itself.
#3 Sign of Love Addiction: Despair
There is a big difference between needing and desperately looking for something. If there is despair for love, it is a sign of love addiction. Despair is not a healthy feeling in terms of a relationship. It means you are desperately looking for love and that you might have a love addiction. It is important to remember that love is free and moves at its own pace.
A common representation of love addiction is if you cannot have time free of a relationship. You have a love addiction when you are desperately searching for love, and you feel you can not be alone for any length of time.
#4 Sign of Love Addiction: Fast Fall In Love
Falling in love is a process, meaning it takes time. Falling in love too fast is a sign of love addiction because love addiction is pathological and ignores time. You don’t feel or live the love process itself, and fast-falling is mostly based on idealization.
Love addiction is real. Like other pathological habits, it is painful and can cause suffering. That is why it is important to be aware of the signs that show we have a love addiction.
