Game Of Thrones was one of the most-streamed series from all times and featured many unique couples. Here are the top 2 most toxic relationships from these series.
The Game Of Thrones series, based on the book series A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R. R. Martin, became a worldwide phenomenon thanks to HBO. The series shared a whole new and different fantasy medieval world.
Within the Game Of Thrones‘ plot, we follow many real-life issues, including several toxic romantic relationships. Toxic relationships happen when at least one partner is hurt, and their wellness is affected by the relationship. Since there is no better way to understand toxic love than through examples, here are the top two toxic relationships from Game of Thrones.
Jaime & Cersei Lannister
Jaime and Cersei Lannister are twin siblings whose incestuous relationship that started when they were young. It started as a sexual affair, more than out of true feelings involvement, which adds to its toxicity.
Not only that, but Cersei and Jaime are also toxic people by themselves. It was a particularly vicious partnership for everyone as they consistently hated others outside their relationships and frequently wished others’ deaths.
Another toxic trait of Jaime and Cersei is that the relationship was also almost entirely one-sided. Jaime gave more love and support through all their relationship than Cersei due to Cersei’s jealousy of Jaime having their father’s love and attention.
Cersei and Jaime are also both traitors. They continued their sexual affair, even when they were with other partners. For example, when Cersei was married to King Robert, she continued her affair with her brother. Their union produced three illegitimate children who Cersei posed as King Robert’s children. Even when Jaime would stray away, Cersei always found ways of drawing him back in, unable to let him go.
Daenerys & Jon
Daenerys and Jon found each other when they most needed it, and the two started as allies in the war for the Seven Kingdoms. But with the passage of the time, they fell in love. At first glance, the two can be considered a couple with a romantic love story. However, the series goes on, the relationship twists and becomes more toxic.
Daenerys’s motivation gradually changes from reaching for justice to reaching for the throne, while Jon begins to uncover more about his and Daenerys’s past and family. The more he finds out, the more it makes him change his opinions on the relationship. Another thing that makes this couple toxic is that they are also in an incestuous relationship.
Even though it isn’t specified in the series, it’s speculated that Daenerys always knew they were biologically related. On the other hand, Jon wasn’t aware of that until he began to discover more about his past. The fact that Daenerys may have kept vital information from him can be considered quite a betrayal.
When Daenerys began acting erratic, Jon started analyzing her sanity behind her back and making judgments, rather than helping her through it. That was another betrayal. Jon discovered the only way to stop Daenerys was to kill her, adding even more to the toxicity. What kind of healthy, supportive relationship involves planning how and when to murder your lover?
So, there you have it! Two great examples of toxic relationships courtesy of Game of Thrones. Both of these couples feature incestuous relationships- one knowingly, and one unknowingly. There is a lot of taboo associated with incest, making the dynamic between these couples very complex. The mixing of roles caused by that dynamic ultimately toxifies each relationship, and the elements of betrayal and manipulation that fuel many of their actions add even more.
Each of these relationships eventually becomes one-sided- an aspect that damages at least one partner, sooner or later. Now, I want to know what you think. Leave a comment below! And I invite you to stay tuned because there are many other toxic couples to share.
