A biblical reflection on earning your way into Heaven and God’s mercy

It is mercy I desire, and not sacrifice.
(Hos. 6:6)

A common question people wonder is: Do we earn our way into Heaven or do we receive it as a free gift from God?

Jesus tells us a story about two men praying. One tells God all he has done to earn his way into Heaven and the other admits he is a sinner and asks for mercy. Jesus tells us that the humble sinner will get to Heaven before the man who tried to earn his way into Heaven.

If we think we can earn Heaven on our own, then we are saying we do not need God. We are saying that we are all-powerful. We are not being humble. We are not recognizing our limitations. We are putting the creation before the creator.

We are all sinners and none of us deserve to enter the Kingdom of God. Only through God’s divine mercy are we able to get into Heaven. Each day we should understand and admit we are unworthy of Heaven and thank God for his unconditional love.

If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
