When you look in the mirror who do you see? Do you see the reflection of a thousand lies? Is it the mask you carefully created? Can you even see the truth?

God’s Image vs Self-Image

How many times have we all stood in front of the mirror and listened to the lies? Lies we aren’t good enough, aren’t smart enough, aren’t talented enough. Lies told by others and lies we told ourselves. We have allowed the world and our lives to shape our self-image with dysfunction. Our real enemy hiding in the mirror is ourselves.

Replace the negative self-image with God’s truth. The world lies to us, but God is full of truth and grace. Identify the issue so God can heal it. Are you ready to replace your self-image with God’s image? Are you ready to heal from the inside?

Self-image: Fearful vs God’s image: Courageous

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. For the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.

Joshua 1:9 NIV

Self-image: Incompetent vs God’s image: Capable

Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

2 Corinthians 3:5-6 NIV

Self-image: Ungifted vs God’s image: Equipped

I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge—God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you. Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 1:4-8 NIV

God is a small whisper of hope in a world bombarded by screams of despair. We search for hope in unfulfilling places that leave us more empty. We search for answers on social media sites that put stock in other’s opinions. We don’t have to stay trapped in the lies of the world. God is here to free us from our internal prison. We can change how we talk to ourselves and He has the tools to help us.

Choosing the Right Thoughts

We have more information than ever before, bombarded by other people’s thoughts and opinions. How much of that information is hopeful? We need more God-like thoughts in our minds. We need to replace how the world makes us feel with God.

We have options for handling our thoughts. We can have a thought, but we don’t have to let the thought have us. Filling our minds with God’s truths can override the world’s negative thoughts. We are one thought away from joy. We are one thought away from healing. It’s time we see other people’s opinions are not limits but interpretations. It comes down to what God has to say.

Self-image: Worthless vs God-image: Valuable

The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.

Zephaniah 3:17 ESV

Self-image: Rejected vs God-image: Accepted

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV

Self-image: Insignificant vs God-image: Special

Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I stand up; you understand my thoughts from far away. You observe my travels and my rest; you are aware of all my ways.

Psalms 139:1-3 CSB

Don’t run from the shame. God wants the lies out of us. Sharing his love with the beauty in His creation. We are born for significance. Use your gifts for God’s glory. Stop the berating, you are more than you thought.

Breaking Free with Praise

Praise is how we fight our battles, surrounding ourself with God, not the worldly pain. Lifting our hands to praise God fills the emptiness in our hearts. Faith as small as a mustard seed is still faith, and the more we praise, the greater our faith grows.

Praise can start off with gratitude. We create what we focus on. Make a gratitude post-it for your bathroom mirror. Do that every day, putting them in different parts of your house. Being grateful creates positive growth.

Some of the happiest people in the world make a minimal amount of money, live in a small house, or drive an old car. It’s not the external that determines our happiness, it’s the internal. If you can’t find the words, find a song. There are countless songs available to help you praise God. A perfect example is Casting Crowns on YouTube. Praising God in the storm doesn’t take the storm away, but it helps survive the storm.

The mirror is full of lies when we listen to the world. That same mirror is full of truth when we listen to God. It’s time to set yourself free with the truth of God. We cannot let our self-image define us when we have God’s image. You are worthy of all God’s desires for your life.
