I look at things differently than most people. To me, these are very exciting times we are living in because we are seeing Scripture played out right in the midst of us.
The Burning of Bibles is Here!
Have you ever heard the term “misotheism”? I hadn’t until today, as I researched for this article. It means “hatred of God.” And if you are a hater of God, you would naturally disdain His written Word–The Holy Bible.
The burning or destroying of Bibles is nothing new. Since the early days of the printed form of God’s Word, it has been hated and destroyed. That goes on daily all over the world.
And now we hear about it in America. It’s nothing new in other parts of the world, but it is to Americans. Real persecution in America is on our horizon. California has already banned home Bible studies.
In the last few days, people in the state of Oregon are not only burning the American flag but Bibles along with the flags. And I’m sure it is happening in other parts of this country as well.
A Spiritual War is in Full Force
War has been declared in the heavenlies. The battle is on. It is a spiritual battle, for we do not fight against flesh and blood, but against the powers of darkness in the heavenly realm (Eph. 6:12). And it is specific to the Word of God. If the powers that be think they will eradicate God’s Word, they are most wrong. People may get rid of the physical Book by burning or somehow destroying them, but that doesn’t mean the Words of God Himself will not endure. Surely they will.
We are living in cliff-hanging times. From one day to the next, the “land of the free” lifestyle we Americans have known is disappearing. Socialism (which leads to Communism) is marching forward throughout our government.
The Word of The LORD endures forever.1 Peter 1:25 (NKJV)
One day in futuristic America, Bibles may be illegal, as in other lands on this planet. We may be forced to make a choice to burn our Bibles. Many years ago, I cut out and pasted a small testimony from Voice of the Martyrs magazine into my Bible. I wanted to be reminded of the preciousness of God’s Word that we Americans take for granted. The testimony is entitled Clinging to The Word.
And it is about an elderly Chinese woman, Mrs. Lu Ying, who was tortured by the Red Guard when they came to her home to confiscate Bibles. After hours of torture, they finally smashed her hands with an iron bar until she could no longer hold onto her precious Bible. Twenty years would pass before she ever was able to hold another Bible.
Should that time come in America, may we all have the courage and strength as this precious Chinese Believer. How much is our Bible worth to us?
