Jesus came down to Earth and gave His life for our salvation. He is the good shepherd and we are his sheep. As Jesus tells us, giving His life for us, is what any good shepherd would do.

Jesus is the Good Shepherd, He Gave His Life For Our Salvation

As a good shepherd, Jesus gave his life for your salvation.

I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

John 10:11

In today’s reading, Jesus talks to us about what being a good shepherd is all about. This may seem foreign to us, as most of us are not shepherds and don’t know any shepherds. Most of us are not farmers or ranchers either.

Just because most of us don’t have first-hand experience with sheep and shepherds, we can still learn from Jesus’ example. Jesus tells us that a good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep.

In this parable, the good shepherd is Jesus. We are the sheep. And Jesus is more than willing to lay down his life so that we all may have salvation. But why?

When we sin we are like a sheep getting lost from the flock. When we get lost we are exposed to the elements and predators. The devil is one such predator.

In order to receive salvation and be free of the devil’s power, we need to harness a power much greater than one we possess. This power comes from Jesus’ death on the cross. Because Jesus died, he gave us the gift of salvation.

Salvation is eternal life in heaven. However, none of us were going to attain salvation, unless something was done. That something was when Jesus gave his life for all of us.

Nothing but Jesus’ life would secure our salvation. God knew this. This is why He gave his only begotten son, Jesus, for us.
