It’s common to not have a car when living in a big city. Here’s three fun day trips near Boston. So take a break from Boston and explore the world beyond.

1. Take the ferry from Boston to lively Provincetown

Provincetown is at the northern tip of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. In 1620, it was where the Mayflower first landed. Today it’s a popular tourist destination that has the largest LGBT community this side of the Mississippi. Spend a day here visiting the beautiful beaches, eating lobster at delicious restaurants, and shopping for souvenirs. The Bay State Cruise Company runs a 90 minute ferry to and from Boston to Provincetown.

Climb the 116 steps of the Pilgrim Monument for an impressive view of Provincetown.

2. Ride the Boston Commuter Rail to Singing Beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea

Scenic Manchester-by-the-Sea is located north of Boston on Cape Ann. There you’ll find Singing Beach. The beach is named after the sound caused by wind passing over the dunes or by walking on the sand. Singing Beach is just under a mile wide and has a bathhouse and snack bar. There is a walk-on fee and season passes are available. To get to Singing Beach, take the Rockport Commuter Rail Line from Boston North Station to the Manchester stop.

Bring your bike on the Commuter Rail Bike Coach and enjoy a day of cycling around Manchester-by-the-Sea.

3. Hop on the train on a day trip to beautiful Mystic, Connecticut

The Amtrak Northeast Regional train from Boston drops you off right in the town of Mystic, Connecticut. Be sure to spend some time exploring the Mystic Aquarium and the Mystic Museum of Art. Grab a slice at the nostalgic Mystic Pizza that inspired the 1988 film of the same name. Get a cone at the famous Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream and enjoy it as you watch the ships sail past.

The Sabino steamboat offers 90 minute cruises that are perfect length if you’re only in town for a few hours.
