Alaska is called the Last Frontier for good reason. It has a ton of wilderness to travel in. It’s far from major cities. Many people still homestead or live in cabins there. It sports an amazing amount of wildlife and mountains. Here are five things to see while you’re there.

Denali National Park

You will travel for a while on the Alaska Highway on the way to this beautiful preserve. This park is enormous. The beauty is apparent even from the edge of the highway. Be sure to pack carefully for this trip. If you go in to the park and enjoy the trails, you will need lots of mosquito dope and bear spray as well as a bear bell. It is full of wildlife.

Alaska, and especially Denali National Park, is home to an amazing amount of wildlife. As you travel, you will see rarer and rarer wildlife. But, even the areas near the roads have a higher number than normal of moose, bears, and birds.

People love to hike the mountains around this park, which is one of the most famous travel destinations in Alaska. The edge of the park is low elevation, but as you hike further in, there are mountains. The park is over six million acres. There is only one road to travel here, but you can see a lot from it.

The Mountains of Hatcher Pass

This is a beautiful area where people ski during the winter. In the summer, you can hike the mountains at Hatcher Pass. An old gold mine is inactive but still preserved there. This area is all mountains, and they are quite steep to travel even for people in Alaska.

If you drive up the back side of Hatcher pass, you will see a lot of wildlife. This area doesn’t have as many people hiking around. Travel either the front or the back of this pass to experience wildlife like rare birds, badgers, marmots, and more. There are travel buses to this part of the mountains, so you can avoid driving up the steep areas.

The Largest Sled Race in Alaska

Alaska is also home to another type of wildlife: sled dogs. These amazing athletes are the stars of the outdoor show in the spring. Many people travel to see the opening of the race in Anchorage, Alaska every year.

The sled dogs are as much a part of the landscape of Alaska as the other animals. They absolutely love running. As elite athletes, they have a special place in the heart of Alaskans. Don’t miss this racing event if you can travel in the spring.
