One of the hardest parts about international travel is foreign time zones. Make this international time change easier on you and your body. Use these travel abroad tips for foreign time zones.
Preparing for Foreign Time Zones: Before Your Trip
To prepare for your big international travel trip, there are several things you can do to adjust your body’s internal clock.
First, alter your bedtime.
Going to bed 15 or 30 minutes early will help get your body ready for the time change. The sooner you start the preparation process, the better.
It’s also a wonderful idea to take 2-3 days before your international trip to just relax. This downtime and extra rest can make the foreign time change an easier change.
Up your water intake before travel. This helps avoid headaches, fatigue, and dehydration. Cut down on coffee, sugar, and alcohol to help get better sleep.
Preparing for Foreign Time Zones: During Your Flight
Again, water is a key factor in keeping your energy levels up. Staying hydrated will also help cut down on your jet lag and make adjusting to the time change less stressful.
Listen to your body’s internal clock. If you’re on a long 10 or 15 hour flight, a nap is okay. If you can stay awake, however, that’s usually the better option.
Be sure to adjust all your electronic devices and watch. Navigating foreign time zones with inaccurate devices can lead to travel issues.
Preparing for Foreign Time Zones: While You are There
Even with all your preparation to adjust your internal clock, there is still a little more left to do. First, if you arrive while it’s still daylight out, go explore the area.
If it’s evening, try to stay up as late as you can. You’ll sleep soundly through the night. Take melatonin at night to fall asleep fast and stay asleep.
Each morning, get up as soon as possible and go for a walk. The sunlight and fresh air will make the foreign time change seem much more bearable.
